Choosing the Right Twist Joist Strap
- Length and twist position: two straps of the same length can have the twist in different places. Always send a drawing or sample.
- Thickness and width: heavier straps are used for larger members and higher tie-down demands. State the base metal thickness.
- Hand: some straps are made in left and right hand versions, others are universal. Confirm before production.
- Hole pattern: the holes should suit the nails or screws the installer will use.
Strap selection for tie-down connections should follow the building design, which in Australia usually refers to AS 1684 and in New Zealand to NZS 3604.
Common Purchasing Mistakes
Ordering by overall length only. The twist position, leg lengths and hole pattern decide whether the strap fits the joint.
Writing “galvanised” without the coating. State G300 Z275 so the steel grade and zinc coating are both clear.
Ignoring left and right hand. A handed strap installed the wrong way round will not sit flat. Confirm the hand before mass production.
Treating all timber straps as the same. Twist straps, straight joist straps, cyclone straps and strap bracing look similar but are different items.
