How to Select AS1252 Structural Washers
Order by the standard and bolt size, for example “M20 structural washer to AS/NZS 1252.1”. Structural washers are thicker and harder than ordinary flat washers, and their sizes are different from general metric washers.
Match the finish to the bolts and nuts: hot-dip galvanised for exposed work, plain for painted or internal work. Washer use in a structural connection should follow the steel design and the project bolting specification.
Common Purchasing Mistakes
Using only the old name. “AS1252” is still the common trade name, but the current standard is AS/NZS 1252.1:2016. Quote it on your orders.
Substituting ordinary flat washers. A mild steel flat washer is not a hardened structural washer.
Mixing finishes in one assembly. Galvanised washers should go with galvanised bolts and nuts.
Keeping structural and commercial washers under one code. They look similar. Give each its own item code and label.
