Safety Chain

Welded trailer safety chains in hot-dip galvanised carbon steel or stainless steel, load-tested and supplied in cut lengths with hooks and shackles to your specification.

Category:

Trailer safety chains are the back-up connection between a trailer and the towing vehicle. If the coupling comes loose, the chains keep the trailer attached. They are fitted to box trailers, boat trailers, caravans, plant trailers and farm equipment.

Linkworld supplies fully welded safety chain in hot-dip galvanised carbon steel and in stainless steel, in cut lengths or as finished chains with end fittings. Chain grade, size, length and marking are made to the standard or specification you give us, and chains can be load-tested before shipment. We pack in bulk cartons or in your own branded packs.

Where Safety Chains Are Used

  • Box and utility trailers light trailers towed by cars and utes
  • Boat trailers where galvanised or stainless chain resists salt water
  • Caravans and campers as part of the towing connection
  • Plant and farm trailers for machinery and implement towing
  • Marine and industrial uses general securing where a welded chain is specified

Choosing a Trailer Safety Chain

Start with the market and the trailer. In Australia, trailers up to 3.5 tonnes ATM use safety chain to AS 4177.4, which sets chain classes and permanent marking. In New Zealand the requirement depends on the trailer weight and braking. In North America, chain is usually ordered by grade, such as Grade 30, 43 or 70.

Then choose the finish: hot-dip galvanised for general use, stainless steel for boat trailers and coastal areas. Give the chain size, cut length and end fittings, and tell us if load testing is required. Chain selection for road use should follow the local vehicle rules.

Common Purchasing Mistakes

Ordering by chain diameter only. An 8 mm or 10 mm chain is not automatically right for every trailer. State the standard and class or grade.

Mixing trailer chain with general chain. General welded chain and trailer safety chain can look the same. State the intended use and the marking required.

Leaving the finish open. Self colour, galvanised and stainless chain are different items and should have separate codes.

Forgetting the end fittings. Say whether you need S hooks, shackles or grab hooks fitted, and the finished length.
