How to Specify Square Washers
Give the bolt size first, then the plate size and thickness, for example “M12, 50 x 50 x 3 mm”. Several plate sizes can suit the same bolt, so the bolt size alone is not enough.
Then choose the finish. Hot-dip galvanised is the common choice for outdoor and structural work; mechanically galvanised gives an even coating on smaller parts; stainless steel is used for coastal jobs or where the project calls for it.
Common Purchasing Mistakes
Ordering by bolt size only. The same bolt can take several plate sizes. Give the outside size and thickness.
Leaving the hole size open on custom parts. Give the hole diameter or send a drawing.
Writing “galvanised” only. Hot-dip galvanised and mechanically galvanised are different finishes. State which one you need.
Sending a sample with no notes. Confirm the outside size, thickness, hole size, material and finish with the sample.
