How to Specify a U Bolt for Steel Pipe
Start with the actual outside diameter of the pipe or tube, not the nominal pipe size. Then give the rod diameter, inside width, inside length and thread length. A drawing or a marked-up sketch is the clearest way to show where each dimension is measured.
Choose the material and finish for the environment: zinc plated for indoor use, hot-dip galvanised for outdoor work, and stainless steel for coastal or wash-down areas.
Common Purchasing Mistakes
Ordering by nominal pipe size. Nominal bore and outside diameter are different. Give the actual outside diameter.
Sending only rod diameter and length. Inside width and thread length are also needed for the U bolt to fit.
Leaving out plates and nuts. If you need complete sets, say so at the start so they are packed together.
Leaving the finish open. Plain, zinc plated, galvanised and stainless U bolts are different items.
